Mission: an open European union of all national dart unions made for all players for the advancement of darts

Goal: to become a member of the International Olympic Committee

History of EDU

The idea of establishing a European Dart Union was formed with the contact of several national federations, above all the Italian FIDART and the Swiss CSS. The reason it was established was to form a union which would be open without any limits and conditions for all European dart players. This was a key detail of the future development of darts in accordance with EDU.
The first historical meeting happened in the German city of Singen. Present at this meeting were the representatives of Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic. It was then agreed that a new European Dart Union (EDU) would be established.
The founding session of EDU was held on March 13, 1995 in the Swiss city of Naters. This was how EDU came to be with five member countries.
The first European Championship was held in 1996 in the Swiss city of Brig where the headquarters of EDU is still to this day. Since then, the European Championships are held in a different country each year.

EDU grew to over 200,000 players
One of the most important moments in the development of EDU and its great expansion happened on June 8, 2007 in Prague when a decision was made on the session of EDU that this organization be transformed into the International Dart Federation.
This was done so that IDF, as an international organization with a tradition and reputation which was made by EDU, could apply for admittance into the International Olympic Committee (IOC) which would be a precondition that Darts be a displayed sport on the Olympic Games.
One January 5, 2008 in Bolzen there was a meeting held where the new EDU was established on the tradition and philosophy of the prior with a new Statute, and a new Executive Board was elected consisting of nine members from eight different countries. These are:

  • Karl Plank, president (Italy)
  • Stefan Reichert, vice-president (Germany)
  • Roger Volken, CEO / director (Switzerland)
  • Rainer Eder (Austria)
  • Günther Kasal (Italy)
  • Darko Plazek (Croatia)
  • Christian Ramm (France)
  • Rafael Garcia (Spain)
  • Radek Hrdlička (Czech Republic)

On the meeting in Bolzano it was announced that DSAB, the largest German association of electronic darts which has approximately 60,000 players, joined EDU. In this way, EDU became the largest organization of electronic darts in Europe and can praise itself with members that exceed 200,000 players which come from 21 different countries.
We are certain that in the future, EDU will grow even more because there are even more associations which have shown interest in becoming its members, and the doors of EDU are wide open to them.
More and more competitors in European Championships, from 350 in Brig in 1996 to 2,000 in Prague in 2007 (in 7 days) show the continuous progress and expansion of Darts. In comparison with this, the organization of European Championships becomes a more demanding project each year, first of all concerning the size, organization, number of players and importance of the Darts as a prestigious competition.
